Thoughts after reading chapter 1:
GPa thinks the setting changed too fast. They spent 4 years on the spaceship yet didn’t tell us much about it.
Grand kept thinking about what book she would take…..maybe Lonesome Dove since it is a favorite, it is very long, and has amazing characters. What about you? Did you have any thoughts about chapter 1? Write about it in the comments.
Chapter 2
Happy Birthday, GPa
4/22
Update: Beah has had her eye surgery and is doing well. She will go back to the doctor tomorrow to see how she is 24 hours after her procedure. I will give an update.
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 is an important one. Stories have a beginning, middle and end. Chapters 1 and 2 are the beginning of this story. We learn the setting and most of the characters. Chapters 3 and 4 are the middle and introduce the problem in the story.
Every story has a problem. Solving the problem is the plot of the story. The remaining chapters will show the characters solving the problem. We will pick up our pace with the remainder of the book since this is the point of the story that builds tension. This is when the reader's interest increases.
The author allows the children be the explorers that move the story along. We find out that our characters are indeed from Earth. The children don't remember Earth as much, so they do not feel the homesickness or fear the way the adults do. They like to explore and they are the ones to find the amphitheater (a bowl shaped area with seats surrounding a stage or space for plays and sporting events) in Boulder Valley.
We find out that all of the people have a job or responsibility to help each other survive. Peter is our expert and doesn't think there are other living beings, except they register cycles of life-like rhythms from somewhere. We also learn that the group only has enough seeds for one harvest. Also, everything they brought with them will run out. Fortunately, Father wants to be the person that comes up with needed replacements for the computers and spacecraft that will soon no longer work. He planned to be "the kind of person who long ago helped the poor people on Earth." He and his children would make "gadgets" as their contribution to the community.
Please list the names of any new characters introduced. Then, read chapters 4 and 5.
