I think we all knew this distance learning was going to take some time to adjust. I know this past week
was challenging, and I am sorry. I kept trying the assignments on different devices and browsers. I used a very old laptop, my laptop from school, a Mac Air, and a cell phone. Wow! I learned a lot. This will help me make better assignments this week.
As you know, Alabama has a Course of Study for each grade. I use this to plan lessons. Due to the pandemic, the state has let teachers know which objectives to be sure are covered. We have done a lot of these already.
Please know that I did not use SpellingCity for tests. I assigned games to cover certain phonics objectives. These are meant to be fun. Pearsonrealize did not work worth a fiddle. It is the reading series we use at school, but I have found something we can use instead. I hate that it took such an effort to get Math Facts in a Flash working for everyone. However, math facts are an "essential" required by our school system. We tried another program Xtramath, but the kids did not like it because it was too difficult to advance. We are not going to use Edmentum because the kids and I are sick of it. I found something else.
This week we will use IXL to meet any objectives that we have left to cover. We have completed all Social Studies, but we still have some Reading, English, Math, and Science to go. We also need to continue with our Eureka Math. That is where Zearn comes in. I will have the students watch a teaching video, then they will do the Zearn lesson. It follows their textbook format. I will use SpellingCity mainly for phonics. I will assign games again. The Epic website is wonderful. They have fun things to do in addition to providing books for the kids to read. Now that we have condensed down to what is working, we will go back to setting a weekly reading goal. The children can read a book of their own or a book from Epic. While we adjust, I will just ask that they earn 1 point and keep an average of 80%.
Again, thank you for your patience. I will say it again, I appreciate this group of parents so much. You want your kids to succeed.
     Sincerely,
     Sara Robinson
