- The Green Book
Examine the cover carefully. Do you get a hint about the setting? That will be important. In our last book, we paid close attention to characters and things that could not be real. This time we need to pay special attention to setting.

Thoughts after reading chapter 1:
GPa thinks the setting changed too fast. They spent 4 years on the spaceship yet didn’t tell us much about it.
Grand kept thinking about what book she would take…..maybe Lonesome Dove since it is a favorite, it is very long, and has amazing characters. What about you? Did you have any thoughts about chapter 1? Write about it in the comments.
Chapter 2
- Read the chapter

- Characters—the characters in Sideways Stories From Wayside School were easy to identify. The characters in The Green Book are more difficult to keep straight and remember. Let’s all work on the list.

Update: Beah has had her eye surgery and is doing well. She will go back to the doctor tomorrow to see how she is 24 hours after her procedure. I will give an update.
Chapter 3
Chapter 3 is an important one. Stories have a beginning, middle and end. Chapters 1 and 2 are the beginning of this story. We learn the setting and most of the characters. Chapters 3 and 4 are the middle and introduce the problem in the story.
Every story has a problem. Solving the problem is the plot of the story. The remaining chapters will show the characters solving the problem. We will pick up our pace with the remainder of the book since this is the point of the story that builds tension. This is when the reader's interest increases.
The author allows the children be the explorers that move the story along. We find out that our characters are indeed from Earth. The children don't remember Earth as much, so they do not feel the homesickness or fear the way the adults do. They like to explore and they are the ones to find the amphitheater (a bowl shaped area with seats surrounding a stage or space for plays and sporting events) in Boulder Valley.
We find out that all of the people have a job or responsibility to help each other survive. Peter is our expert and doesn't think there are other living beings, except they register cycles of life-like rhythms from somewhere. We also learn that the group only has enough seeds for one harvest. Also, everything they brought with them will run out. Fortunately, Father wants to be the person that comes up with needed replacements for the computers and spacecraft that will soon no longer work. He planned to be "the kind of person who long ago helped the poor people on Earth." He and his children would make "gadgets" as their contribution to the community.
Please list the names of any new characters introduced. Then, read chapters 4 and 5.
Beah is doing better. Her eye is healing, but she is still weak from the pre-surgery med. We are hoping she can get more fluid into her.
Chapter 4
Please tell us in the comments.
It won't be long now until you finish the book and will understand the prize.
Beah is doing much better. She is getting stronger every day. We will take her back to the doctor on Wednesday to see how successful the surgery was. We will be back in Andalusia in time to see Lily's band concert.
GPa's last comments sum up the problem and solution: I have read chapters 4 and 5. The story’s problem appears in chapter 4. The seeds from Earth that were planted in previous chapters are not developing in the environment of the new planet the same as they develop on Earth. Abby and Lilli Beth, what might happen to Pattie and her family if the seeds do not grow food that can be eaten? Tell me what you think in the comments.
And:I have finished reading The Green Book. I like how the problem was solved. I was surprised to find out that the book is actually Pattie’s journal where she wrote the story of traveling from Earth to live on a new planet with her family and other families. Abby, who discovered that the wheat was ok to eat?
Abby's Book Gifts
Can anyone see how the gifts relate to the book?
